Give customers better support with WooCommerce and Help Scout connected

When a customer asks about an order, your support team needs more than a message in an inbox. They need to understand which purchase the customer is referring to and have a straightforward way to follow up.

Help Scout Integration for WooCommerce connects your WooCommerce store with a Help Scout mailbox. Customers can start and follow support conversations from your store, while your team handles those requests in Help Scout with relevant WooCommerce information close at hand.

  • Connect support to orders: Let customers request help from their WooCommerce order details.
  • Make follow-up easier: Allow customers to view and reply to support conversations from My Account.
  • Give agents store context: Display WooCommerce customer information in the Help Scout sidebar when configured.
  • Start conversations from orders: Let store staff contact customers through Help Scout directly from the WooCommerce admin.
  • Offer support beyond the order page: Add a conversation form elsewhere on your site or turn a WordPress comment into a Help Scout conversation.
Less searching, more useful replies. When a customer contacts you about a purchase, an order-linked support conversation helps your team understand the question without starting from scratch or asking the customer to explain which order they mean.

Keep order-related conversations connected to the purchase

Shipping questions, missing items, returns, and special requests all have one thing in common: the order matters. Instead of making customers search for a general contact page, give them a natural way to ask for help where they already review their purchases.

Let customers ask for help from their orders

The extension adds a Get Help option to the customer order experience. From the relevant order, a customer can enter a subject and message to open a Help Scout conversation associated with that purchase.

This is especially useful for post-purchase questions, when customers may not know which email address to contact or what information to include in their first message.

Start a conversation from the WooCommerce admin

Your team can also initiate a Help Scout conversation while reviewing an order in WooCommerce. Use the order’s support form to send a message about an address question, a special request, or an issue that needs clarification. Once created, the conversation can be opened in Help Scout for continued handling.

Not every support request begins with the customer. When your team spots a question or problem during order review, start the conversation from the order instead of composing a separate email and trying to reconnect it with the purchase later.

Give your support team useful WooCommerce context in Help Scout

Your agents already manage conversations in Help Scout. The integration helps connect that workspace with your store so they can reference customer information while answering questions.

When the Help Scout sidebar integration is configured, WooCommerce information can appear beside the relevant conversation. This gives agents a more useful starting point for investigating an order-related request, with less switching between the help desk and store admin.

Keep conversations in Help Scout, where your team can use the mailbox and collaboration tools available with your Help Scout plan.

Make it easier for customers to follow up

Support does not always end with the first reply. A customer might need to provide another detail, check what your team said, or follow up on a return.

Help Scout Integration for WooCommerce gives customers access to their support conversations from the My Account area of your store. They can review the conversation and send a reply without having to find the original support email.

  • Give customers a familiar place to find their support conversations.
  • Allow follow-up replies from their WooCommerce account.
  • Keep the discussion connected to Help Scout rather than creating a separate store-side ticket system.
A more convenient post-purchase experience. Customers can return to their account to follow up on a support question, while your team continues the conversation from its Help Scout mailbox.

Offer support in more places across your website

Add a contact form where customers need it

Not every question relates to an existing order. The extension includes a reusable conversation form shortcode that you can place on a suitable WordPress page or support area:

[wc_help_scout_form]

The form can be used by logged-in customers and guests, so visitors can contact your support team even when they are not viewing a WooCommerce order.

Move questions out of blog comments and into support

If a customer leaves a question or complaint in a WordPress blog comment, your team can turn that comment into a Help Scout conversation instead of trying to resolve everything in a public discussion. The commenter must have supplied an email address for this feature to work.

Fit Help Scout into your team’s support workflow

Configure the connection and conversation options to suit how your team handles incoming requests.

  • Help Scout mailbox connection: Send conversations to the mailbox you configure for the store.
  • Optional assignment: Specify a Help Scout user for new conversations, or leave them unassigned.
  • CC and BCC options: Include additional recipients where appropriate for your support process.
  • Debug logging: Enable logging when troubleshooting a connection or conversation issue.
  • High-Performance Order Storage: Use the extension with WooCommerce’s HPOS order-storage architecture.

What you need to get started

You need an active Help Scout account and subscription, purchased separately from this extension, along with WooCommerce on your WordPress site.

Connect the extension to your Help Scout mailbox using the required app credentials and authorization process. The Help Scout sidebar connection also needs its own configuration to show WooCommerce information inside Help Scout.

Important setup detail: Help Scout authentication must be completed correctly before customers and staff can create conversations. Use the correct Help Scout app credentials, mailbox details, and redirect URL, then finish the authorization step. The setup documentation walks through the process.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate Help Scout account to use this plugin?

Yes. You'll need an active Help Scout account and subscription, purchased separately from the WooCommerce extension.

Why isn't the "Get Help" button working or creating a conversation?

This usually indicates a problem with the connection between WooCommerce and Help Scout.

Under WooCommerce → Settings → Integration → Help Scout, verify that your App Key, App Secret, Mailbox ID, and OAuth redirect URL are correct.

Make sure you created your application under Your Profile → My Apps in Help Scout, rather than creating a custom sidebar app. These serve different purposes.

Save your settings and select Allow Access to complete or renew authorization. If the button itself is missing, also check whether the Hide Help Button setting is enabled.

Why aren't customer details or recent orders appearing in my Help Scout sidebar?

The sidebar needs to match the Help Scout contact with the corresponding WooCommerce customer or order information.

If information is missing, check that:

  • The customer email address matches their WooCommerce account or billing email.
  • Your Help Scout custom sidebar app is correctly configured.
  • The callback URL points to the correct WooCommerce REST API endpoint.
  • The sidebar authentication settings match your plugin configuration.

The extension supports both registered customers and guest-order lookups, but information may not appear if no matching WooCommerce record can be found.

For the custom sidebar, use the setup instructions in the Help Scout documentation.

Does Help Scout Integration work with HPOS and guest orders?

Yes. The extension includes support for WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS), including customer lookups for guest orders.

For registered customers, information can be matched using their WooCommerce account. For guest orders, the integration uses the order's billing email address to locate relevant purchase information.

If a guest customer's order doesn't appear in Help Scout, confirm that the email addresses match and that your sidebar integration is configured correctly.

Why am I seeing a "woocommerce_api_no_route" error or a sidebar connection error?

This error has historically occurred when a Help Scout integration attempts to use an outdated or incorrectly configured WooCommerce API endpoint.

The extension supports modern WooCommerce REST API handling, with Standard and Custom (v2) API handler options.

Use Standard for most stores. The Custom (v2) option should generally be used only when directed by OPMC Support.

If you experience this error, verify the sidebar app's callback URL, authentication configuration, and API handler settings. You should not need to re-enable WooCommerce's retired Legacy REST API solely to use the current OPMC custom sidebar integration.

Why can't a customer see or reply to their support conversations in My Account?

Customers can view and reply to their Help Scout conversations through My Account → Support Conversations, provided they're logged in and the conversations are associated with their account.

For customer privacy, the extension restricts access so customers can only view and reply to conversations they own.

If conversations are missing, confirm that the customer is signed in with the correct account and that their WooCommerce and Help Scout customer records are correctly associated.

Also verify that the Hide Support Conversations From Sidebar option is not enabled.

Can customers without accounts contact support, and can they attach files?

Yes. You can add a Help Scout conversation form to a suitable page using this shortcode:

[wc_help_scout_form]

The form supports logged-in customers and guest visitors, allowing shoppers to request assistance even if they don't have an account.

Customers can provide their name, email address, subject, and message. The extension also supports file attachments, including JPG, JPEG, PNG, and PDF files.

Logged-in customers can additionally use their My Account area to view and respond to their existing conversations.

What should I do if the plugin causes PHP warnings or conflicts with another extension?

First, ensure you're using the latest version of Help Scout Integration for WooCommerce and compatible versions of WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP.

If you encounter a warning or unexpected behavior:

  • Check WooCommerce → Status → Logs for relevant errors.
  • Enable the plugin's Debug Log temporarily to collect troubleshooting information.
  • Test for conflicts using a staging environment with other plugins temporarily disabled.
  • Contact OPMC Support with the error message, relevant logs, and your WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP versions.

The extension is actively maintained to address compatibility, security, and integration issues as the WooCommerce platform evolves.

We reported some issues to the support and get quick considerations from them. All good!

This plugin causes so many issues with Woocommerce. It's the most flawed plugin of the 85 that we use. It's an incredibly basic plugin with incredibly widespread conflicts and flaws, and there's no alternative. Support takes days to respond, which is insane when it's a paid plugin. Every single time we report issues to our hosting company, they respond that they determined it's caused by this plugin. It seems like this plugin has been abandoned. They claim it works with HPOS, but it doesn't...at least not with guest orders. I reported the bugs over 2 months ago and even sent them the likely solutions. Support acknowledged the bugs and said a fix would be released in an upcoming version. It has been almost two months, and no update has been released.

It's been ok when it's worked, but the developers seem slow to respond to changes within the WooCommerce space. As a recent example, Woo finally retired the legacy API in Oct 2023, although it had been dead for years prior to this. However, this plugin in July 2024 still relies on the legacy API to pull the WooCommerce order data into Help Scout. Sure the basic plugin functionality works, but it's not 100% functional unless you enable compatibility mode in HPOS. That's ok short term, but we've been waiting for an update on this, and it's now 4 months since the last one, and we're now at the point where we're just going to throw in the towel on Help Scout and move to another help desk. It's just frustrating because it's not like the Woo changes haven't been coming a long way off.

Basic functionality is left broken for months The support seems like they might be helpful, but features that are basic to the plugin are left broken for months without a fix. The button for starting a conversation from an order does not work and confuses customers.
